A legend praises Richards, and an EPL draft?
By: Patrick | August 21st, 2007Big match for England today (Prediction: England 1, Germany 0), but in the leadup to the match at Wembley, Alan Shearer has given his two cents (look on the bottom) on Micah Richards.
Also, just for debate sake (and I know this is very “American” of me), but if everyone in the EPL were to get dropped from their clubs, and the players were then reclaimed in a draft - where would Richards go?
How many defenders would get picked before him? I would say Terry, and then…well, nobody. Remember this isn’t for one season, but forever (being young is an advantage). Anyway, something to think about.
If you guys really want to have fun with it, how about the top-10 picks?

He’d be 5th or 6th choice, I think. He’s young and talented, but he’s still some way off the best defenders in the premiership, and his youth doesn’t compensate for all he lacks.
Terry, Ferdinand, Vidic and Riise would be my first 4 picks, then perhaps King and Cole, then Micah Richards, Gareth Bale or Piqué.

1 - Nani or Anderson
2 - as above, unless they come as a combined package of skillful Portugeuse-speaking-ness
3 - Wayne Rooney (still very young)
4 - The ever erect JT
5 - Micah Richards
6 - Nedum Onuoha (to keep Micah company)
7 - Matt Derbyshire (very promising young striker - maybe more so than Walcott)
8 - David James (someone needs to remind the players not to buy Porsche Cayennes)
9 - Christiano
10 - Titus Bramble - (to keep up morale)

He’s probably a mid-fourth round pick, though I could see a team building for the future and not looking to win immediately taking him earlier.
The thing about Richards is that I guess Sven is going to use him as a centre back to replace Distin instead of right back where he predominantly played the previous two seasons. It was quite evident in the derby match when he was caught out of position a number of times, but used his athletic ability to make up for it. Once he learns the discipline required to play there, he’s going to be scary, especially with a player of Dunne’s caliber not only there to mentor him, but also provide cover fof him when he goes forward.
As for rating him, as of now he’s no where near the top of the centre back list. He’s just too inexperienced. I rate John Terry, Ricardo Carvalho, Daniel Agger, Jamie Carragher, Nemanja Vidić, Richard Dunne, Sylvain Distin, Kolo Touré, William Gallas, Joleon Lescott, and few others above him. Five years from now, I would expect him to be the best in the league and one in the world.
As for overall:
1. Gerrard
2. Terry
3. Ronaldo
4. Drogba
5. Rooney
6. Fabregas
7. Essien
8. Vidic
9. Tevez
10. ArtetaPosted from

[...] also had a solid match, not making any terrible errors and had some timely tackles. After I said good thing after good thing about Richards this past week, he was nothing short of terrible on Saturday. He was always slightly [...]
