a perfect holiday in Cyprus
By: j | September 17th, 2008I’m not sure if Sparky has had the chance to do some sight-seeing around the beautiful Mediterranean island of Cyprus but he certainly was in good fortune when Man City drew AC Omonia in the UEFA Cup.
Heading into today’s match against the tiny squad from Cypriot First Division, this is possibly one of the biggest mis-matches of the tournament. While UEFA does a commendable job making sure smaller leagues and nations are represented, situations such as this make it somewhat questionable. To call this a “mis-match” is an understatement and the biggest question will be whether Mark Hughes risks some of his top shelf talent or runs out substitutes and gives them valuable playing time. There has been no indication of what direction he’ll go, so it is entirely possible we’ll see the likes of Jô, Robinho, Vincent Kompany and Shaun Wright-Phillips. Mr. Martin Petrov is out and hopefully will be recovered from his hamstring injury this weekend.
Mark Hughes commented regarding the match:
“The games are coming thick and fast at the moment and I have to be mindful of that.
“We will have to use the squad because it’s a big ask going into European games, Carling Cup games and some very difficult Premier League games.
“If we have to use all of the squad then we will do, but that is what being a Premier League player is all about.”
My gut instinct is after a disappointing match against Chelsea and prior flubs in UEFA Cup qualifying, City will look to rip through the home clubs netting and grab some headlines. As the Club progresses in the UEFA Cup and approaches the January transfer window, the UEFA Cup will become a focal point in building the hardware case.
I will report on the match as it concludes.
