Arrest Warrant Issued for Thaksin Shinawatra
By: j | August 11th, 2008Thailand’s Supreme Court issued arrest warrants for Manchester City owner Thaksin Shinawatra and his wife after the pair did not show-up for their hearing on corruption charges.
In issuing the statement the Bangkok court said: “The court sees that the defendants have broken their bail terms. Therefore, it issues an arrest warrant and orders their (£200,000) bail bonds to be seized.”
Earlier this morning, in a hand-written media statement, Thaksin Shinawatra commented:
“What happened to me and my family and my close relations resulted from efforts to get rid of me from politics. These are my political enemies. They don’t care about the rule of law, facts or internationally recognised due process.”
To avoid extradition to Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra and his wife, who equally was sentenced to three years in jail and out on bail as part of this appeal, may claim political asylum in Britain although there has been no comment on this yet.
Thai officials are considered likely to go-ahead with the case and try the pair in absentia. If found guilty, he can be disqualified as a Director of Manchester City in violation of the Premier League rulebook.
