Citizens close in on UEFA Cup quarter-finals

By: j | March 13th, 2009

The tumultuous Manchester City campaign is staring down a UEFA Cup quarter-final appearance as they defeated Aalborg BK 2-0 in the opening leg at Eastlands. Sadly a positively horrible turnout by City supporters missed a superb performance by Mark Hughes in which the final score was flattering to the Dane’s. City got off to a fast start, taking the lead eight minutes in as Robinho provided Felipe Caicedo the ball, with the Ecuadorian striker pounding ball in. Magnus Pehrsson’s Danish side feel two goals down a half-hour on a brilliant one-man effort by Shaun Wright-Phillips that he completed with a drive into the netting. Whilst City should have added to the margin later on, they were unable to break through again and the match ended without further market.
