City move for Nigel de Jong
By: j | January 16th, 2009A variety of German news agencies are reporting that Manchester City has tabled a €15m bid on Nigel de Jong of Hamburger SV. The twenty-four year-old Netherlands international would be another cog in shoring up the City defending abilities and he would join for Hamburg teammate Vincent Kompany who joined the Citizens in the August of this past year.
Both clubs have yet to issue statements.

I will update this shortly but unfortunately sitting in a airport and cannot do so immediately. However the offer has been confirmed by Hamburg but they have not responded yet.
This potential acquisition of Nigel is per Mark Hughes directive as well.

This guy is a fantastic player. However, does this mean Kompany is moving back into the center of defense? And if so, does this mean the end for Dunne?

You’d have to think that Kompany would go back to central defense and De Jong would take his position in the midfield. De Jong is in the process of negotiating a contract extension with HSV, but the club has a famous, unwritten rule that nobody is safe from being sold–witness Kompany and Rafael van der Vaart, two of the best in recent history at Hamburg.

I think he’ll play both Jong and Kompany like Marco Van Basten played him in Euro 2008. During the tournament he was played as a “screening midfielder” partnering with Orlando Engelaar in a 4-2-3-1 formation. The team conceded only 1 goal in the group stages.
