if ever there was a run-out this is it
By: j | August 6th, 2008Yes, I’m not sure how fans can be duped into paying for this one but if ever there was a “run-out” tonights affair against Celtic is it. As my good friend Matt will tell you, with the opening of the Scottish Premier Leauge on Sunday against St Mirren, Celtic is not going to push forward in a bombastic attack. Oh I’m sure they’ll respect their fans with a noble effort but make no mistakes, this will be the cheeriest of friendlies. We’ll likely see some good quality keep-ball, a few good youngsters on the pitch and in-the-end someone on the payroll will call the eventual draw (my predication) a “fine match”.
Yes I know my phrasing seems a bit biting but I’ve been reading through a number of the dailies and amongst the clatter of a “spirited” match I have to wonder who’s on the payroll. Lets be honest here, this will be a “fine” friendly but don’t get all warm and fuzzy if City defeats a Celtic squad laden with players who aren’t expected to play on Sunday.
What should be seen in this match, is the heavy use of younger players Ben Mee, Vladimír Weiss, Ched Evan and Daniel Sturridge from the start. Let them see some quality time particularly at the start of the match where Celtic will use a lineup closer to its starting grid. I’m also not going to get all excited if Martin Petrov proves he can dominate, we know that…turn the page and do something that’ll impact the squad as opposed to giving journalists in the back pocket something to write about.
Updates to follow during the match.

Wow, interesting starting 11 to be sure, no Mee, Weiss, Evans OR Sturridge.

Richard – thanks for joining in. Very disappointing lineup and performance. Hopefully this others will used against AC Milan on the 9th. What was your take on the match?
