just like debutante ball
By: j | July 10th, 2008
The notion of the “debutante ball”, while remarkably out-dated, harkens back to a time of aristocratic world presenting a young women to society in a formal occasion, noting her availability for courtship. This naturally varies from region to region and within present culture some might argue how it no longer reflects the original intention. Now before this blog post gets completely off-base with this ridiculous anecdote, let me give you and idea of how this “showcasing” relates to City.
With Mark Hughes leading the squad through an apparently physically grueling training camp in Germany, the message has been loud and clear that this will be a “fitter” squad than the previous one. Yesterday, with barely a warning, a friendly was arranged against Ukrainian club Metalurh Zaporizhya, which had been training locally.
The match ended in a nil draw and as customary in these types of situations there were ten substitutions. Of important note was the use of Bernardo Corradi and Rolando Bianchi to start the match with Nery Castillo and Wales national Ched Evans coming in off the bench in support. As talks of Bernardo Corradi advance with Reggina and Rolando Bianchi at either Genoa, Reggina or a late entry to the mix, VfL Wolfsburg of the Bundesliga, it is clear that their use was to showcase their talents.
However with the club heading off to the Faroe Islands to face EB/Streymur in UEFA Cup next week and dreadfully low in the Striker department given Jô will not debut for at least six weeks, it is quite possible that we’ll see this tandem further highlighted, in an effort to draw their price up.
