the brave new world of Man City

By: j | September 2nd, 2008

If you were one of “those” types who stayed out of the loop (i.e. weren’t “connected” online always) you’re possibly waking up to a very odd new Football world in the last thirty-six hours. With the City’s new ownership, led Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim of the Abu Dhabi United Group, the club now has the backing of one of the world’s wealthiest families, with the intention of making it the best in the world.

Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim has made it known that he intends on assembling the best club in the world noting:

“We want a team who can win the Champions League.”

While noting acquisition targets of Fernando Torres, Cesc Fábregas, Thierry Henry, David Villa and Ronaldo, he equally suggested a £135m bid for Cristiano Ronaldo in the January transfer window siting the enslaved ones comments:

“Ronaldo has said he wants to play for the biggest club in the world, so we will see in January if he is serious.”

Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim also confirmed that the club will look to bring in a “minimum 18″ players:

“We’re not just going to spend money on anyone, but if we can get the biggest players in the world, and of course if the manager wants them, then we will get them.”

This is a remarkable change of events not simply for Man City but for professional Football. Surely the days, weeks and months ahead for supporters will be unlike anything we have witnessed as the new ownership group is showing intent to spend the funds needed to fill the hardware case. I am aware of a massive series of changes coming to rightfully purge elements of front office left from the prior ownership and this couldn’t happen too soon. As the enormous re-working of the club begins it will need to wipe the slate clean and build up the infrastructure that is sorely lacking but I am positive the new ownership is aware of this and already taking appropriate measures.

Stunning times for Manchester City indeed.
