The Fugitive says he’ll go

By: j | August 23rd, 2008

The fugitive, Thaksin Shinawatra, has offered to step-down as per executive chairman Garry Cook.

Cook warbled the company line, that the fugitive (actually he called him “Dr” to which I hope that some members of the media actually laughed) “is embarrassed about the indignity brought on all the entities – the club, the Premier League – he never intended this.

The CEO went on to comment:

“I think there is a very loose term about what is ’fit and proper.’ It is almost a tongue-in-cheek term that you would use for Premier League football over the last 10 years. There are plenty of unfit and improper individuals.”

Presumably he isn’t discussing executive management who have never been involved in the game, coming in at a high-position and work on back-room deals with their former long-term employers to bring in premiere players to satisfy their business objectives, regardless of actual team performance objectives or agreements the club presently has in place. We’ll save “unfit and improper” test on that one for another time…

The CEO continued to spin a pathetic tale of woe using a low-brow spin-doctor move (really City, if you’re going to use this approach spend a bit and hire a media consulting firm to cleanse this situation) by noting the the fugitive will not be present at Eastlands host West Ham because of fears for his safety.

If you understand media communications and the world of publicity / spin, this is a pathetic ploy to divert attention and win public sentiment. If a leader believes his resignation will assist the organization, he steps down, he doesn’t send a messenger to proclaim he will. It’s a spin and a bad one about someone who has a long career of deceit.
