the Gigi Buffon tale

By: j | November 21st, 2008

I refer to it as a “tale” because it is far from substantiated and questionably worthy of re-telling. However the gist of the matter is that rumour mill is drumming up chit-chat that Man City have tabled a £63m bid for Juventus’ Gigi Buffon and are ready to offer him a contract valued at £12.5m per year. Following the break of this rumour, Juventus mastermind Claudio Ranieri after joking of the talk noted:

“No, joking apart, Gigi remains with us. He will not go anywhere.”

I am prone to say I can’t imagine Gigi, who my opinion isn’t just Italy’s “number 1″ but the finest ‘keeper in the game today, leaving Italy with his young family. Whilst life has many twists and turns in it, this would be a stunning event. However this rumour certainly was stoked by Gigi’s own comments when he stated on Gazzetta TV:

“At the moment a move is not on the cards. Of course if someone offers 50million to the club I will be the first to the tell the directors to sell me. I want the best for Juve and with that amount they could reinforce the squad.”

Yet far beyond my own questioning of him actually coming to Man City, I question why the club wouldn’t shore up it’s entire squad before even jumping into acquisitions of this magnitude. In-fact if these types of situations do become the clubs modus operandi, I hope the Premier League steps in and implements a type of ceiling that ensures that the league is equitable with investment dollars. While in the past championships have certainly been bought, that doesn’t make it “right” and as the financial realities of today set-in, regulatory bodies need to ensure the sanctity of the game and protect its future.

I just happened to read this on the Juve official site.

«Gigi is not for sale at all costs, he is priceless and besides there is no deal, there has never been any contact between the two clubs and there has never been an offer for Buffon by Manchester City. There is no truth in these rumours. I can rest the mind of all our supporters that Gigi will go on playing for us for many years to come and will play in the new Juventus home in the 2011/12 season. I am surprised how this sort of news always emerges just before a big match but in the world of football everything is possible.»

    -Jean-Claude Blanc, Juve managing director.

If it’s true then it’s awesome how rumours can just be made up and spread around so easily.
