time to rule-out Andrei Arshavin
By: j | July 8th, 2008
Maybe it was just me but somehow when I see Andrei Arshavin wearing a jersey with Gazprom as the sponsor, I expect a natural connection with Chelsea’s likable owner Roman Abramovich. Naturally this is a bit of ancient history reaching back to the finance world of Mr. Abramovich’s former holdings in Sibneft, which he sold to Gazprom, Zenit Saint Petersburg major sponsor, but the historical perspective in Andrei’s career and other commonalities are impossible to ignore and would certainly add-up at the bargaining table.
This of course has little to do with Man City’s efforts to land the mercurial Arshavin and it would appear that these efforts have had little if any impact, assuming the club has even drifted past the first phase of discussions. Speaking to the the Daily Telegraph, his agent Dennis Lachter noted “Zenit will definitely not accept an offer of less than €30 m” and that “Andrei would also want around €4m a year net, which clubs would have to pay over three or four years, plus 40 percent tax.” He further added that “The official interest has come from Barcelona, Inter Milan, Valencia and Real Madrid, none from a British club” but would only play for the “big-four”. While Zenit categorically notes on its web-site that it has not negotiated with Chelsea, it should be clear to City fans that Andrei isn’t going to be joining the club and it’s time to turn the page.
Now can we all collectively hope David Bentley is on speed-dial.
