UEFA Cup draw
By: j | August 1st, 2008After making EB/Streymur look like they are ready to burst onto the world Football scene and sending agents scrambling (a “minor” overstatement), Man City received what some might consider a reprieve in the UEFA Cup draw as they will face FC Midtjylland of the Danish Superliga in the next round.
Quite seriously the display which some continue to call “respectable” won’t do against this squad (or for that matter any League Two one either) and they will need to be more focused and diligent in their attack. Finishing yesterday was abysmal. Not “respectable” and certainly not “professional” and if it’s obvious that there is some internal questioning of players when you can’t put two past a squad of amateurs. Maybe that sounds harsh, especially because every other comment has noted things are just fine and dandy but we haven’t seen Premier quality play yet (actually we haven’t seen anything that would challenge Derby last season) and it needs to be said. Apparently help is in the offing with new signings and it couldn’t come sooner because that was a dismal performance.
The Danish squad shouldn’t be taken lightly as they have a solid group of up and coming players who would be more than delighted with a City scalp. The squad includes a number of internationally capped players, Romanian Gheorghe Florescu, Slovakian Maroš Klimpl, as well as a solid group of talented young players. While City should overwhelm Midtjylland, with the matches on August 14th and 28th, there is likely no major changes coming in the squad (particularly with the first) and they will need to adjust their approach and mindset.
As a side note, please do yourselves a favour and plan on seeing both legs of the Deportivo La Coruña v HNK Hajduk Split matches. Breathtaking cities and hopefully if you go, you’ll actually find time to get to the matches.
